During the past 20 years as an academic in Vancouver, Dr. Guns held fellowships and academic appointments with The BC Cancer Agency, as well as University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Faculties of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Having contributed significantly to medical research she steered, participated in and facilitated collaborative efforts with broad research scope. Tantamount to this, in 2003 she joined the inaugural board as a member, later President (2010-2012) of the Natural Health Products Research Society of Canada (www.NHPRS.ca) and in 2020 was recognized for her contributions there when awarded the Neil Towers Award ‘Pride of Burma’ for her lifetime work on natural products research worldwide. Historically, in 1997 an industry MRC fellowship initially led her to North America from the U.K. where she worked at the BC Cancer Agency (Dept of Experimental Therapeutics). Prior to that in the U.K., she graduated from the University of Liverpool in Pharmacology/Chemistry and completed her PhD there on steroid metabolism in 1997 on an industry scholarship.

Medical science research being mainstay in her career, Dr. Guns sat on the clinical research ethics board for UBC and VGH (Vancouver General Hospital) as well as numerous grant review panels, providing expertise in the pre-clinical evaluation of drugs used to treat cancer. She interviewed on local TV and radio about topics of special interest/expertise and published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
Since 2021 she has been a member of an international consortium assembled to tackle symptoms of long-term vitamin D supplementation on COVID. She is a founding member, Secretary and Member of the Board of Directors for the Natural Health Products Research Society of Canada, was an Annual Conference Scientific Committee Member in 2011, was elected Society President from 2010 to 2012 and conducted annual fundraising events for cancer research until 2019.
